Blessed Trinity quarterback Jake Portolesi is a different player this season.
“I’m just an athlete. I went out and played Niagara Spears this summer and it made me such a better player,” the 12B quarterback said Thursday, after throwing three TD passes to lead the visiting Blessed Trinity Thunder to a 49-24 win over the Saint Francis Phoenix in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior football action. “Coach Zav (Spears offensive coordinator Nathan Zavarella) changed my whole game. He put me to work, changed my game and my mindset. I learned how to read a play and read a defence.”
A lot of the 18-year-old’s hard work came at practice because he was backing up Myer star Noah Walters.
“I got into one game — not much playing time at all — and I didn’t even throw one pass but the experience was great,” the 5-foot-11,150 pounder said. “I learned how to lead a team and I learned how to win games.”
