Oct. 14 Niagara Catholic football roundup

Jake Portolesi’s 40-yard TD pass to Adrian Ferro at 3:59 of the fourth quarter allowed the Blessed Trinity Thunder (4-0) to escape with a 7-0 victory over the Saint Paul Patriots (1-3).
Jakub Kowalski added the extra point for the Thunder.
“We made a lot of mistakes and took a lot of unnecessary penalties, particularly some drive killers,” Blessed Trinity head coach Sean Jones said. “Kids on both sides played a tough, hard-fought game. We need to be more disciplined and focused moving forward, but a win is a win.”
Saint Paul missed several opportunities in the game.
“In the second quarter, we had a 12-play, 90-yard drive that started on our 20-yard line and ended with a turnover on downs because we opted to go for the TD instead of the field goal,” Saint Paul head coach Chris Hladich said. “We knocked on BT’s door two more times, however, we could never punch the ball through because of strong BT defence.
The Patriots offence was lead by the offensive line made up of Dio Osundina, Zavier Ennis, Mathew Jordan, Jacob Burton, and Fabian Nevarez.
“The blew open holes for incredible running by Calob Hardman and Victor Abe. Standout returner and receiver Isaiah Paul carved up BT with 150 dynamic yards making multiple defenders miss repeatedly,” he said. “On defence Taylor McQuillan, Nathan Leiva and Owen Saunders had standout games making key plays keeping BT out of the end zone for nearly the entire game.”
Hladich was pleased with his team’s performance.
“This was the most complete football game that we played and I can’t express how proud I am of these boys and what they accomplished in this game. Football is the ultimate team game and the boys proved to themselves that when they support each other, stay focused and execute they are more than a challenge for anyone,” he said. “We will need that energy to beat a DM team that is a force this year.”
